  3-0-3 This course introduces students to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). Students will learn to convert uniform descriptions of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services rendered by health care providers into five-digit numeric codes, necessary for reimbursement. They will learn to correctly apply modifiers to codes when necessary and when to assign temporary alphanumeric codes. The Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) will also be introduced. Sample abstracts from medical records will be utilized for students to apply their knowledge and gain competence in coding. Case studies and sample patient health records will be utilized for students to apply their knowledge and gain competence in coding.   2-0-4-3 This course consists of two components: professional practice experience and classroom sessions. Each week the student will attend a coding proacticum in an affiliated health information department or physician's office to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to code patient health records, using both the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems. The classroom sessions will focus on discussion of professional practice assignments and on reviewing materials to help prepare students to take a national coding certifying exam. Prereqs: AH 190, AH 200, and AH 202. Prerequisite:    Prereqs: AH 190, AH 200, and AH 202.
