  Prepares the advanced practice nurse for provision of comprehensive, quality, and cost effective primary care for older adults. Theories of physical aging, normal physical changes of aging, psychosocial needs, and the economic, political, socio-cultural, legal, and ethical issues of aging will be explored. Through both the theory component and clinical practicum the student will learn to recognize, evaluate, and manage geriatric syndromes prevalent in the older adult population. Atypical presentation of illness and clinical issues unique to frail older adults will also be explored.

  Focuses on the development of advanced population health knowledge and collaborative practice skills to integrate theoretical and practice frameworks, when designing and implementing health promotion and prevention programs. Application of epidemiology, community assessment, critical thinking, communication skills, evidence-based population interventions to plan, implement, and evaluate preventative health programs are performed. Students function independently and collaboratively with other public health professionals and clients in diverse settings to develop innovative programs designed to meet health needs of populations and aggregates. Students will analyze the cultural, social, educational, economic, political, and environmental forces that contribute to health on an international level. Major cultural and ethnic determinants of health in developed and developing countries will be compared. Approaches used by diverse cultures in various countries in solving their health care problems will be addressed. Research on transcultural health issues will be examined. The role of major international health organizations dealing with cultural and ethical issues in world health will be evaluated.
