This course is an introductory study of human language theory. Given evidence from various languages, students will formulate explicit generalizations, which will give them insight into linguistic theory. Investigation will then turn to social variations within languages, changes that occur in languages over time, the use of language to communicate, and language acquisition. Pre-requisite: ENGL162 or 163; two ENGL courses other than 090 or 103.
