3-4-5 An upper level organic chemistry course for Biology, Chemistry, Engineering and pre-professional program students requiring one or more semesters of organic chemistry. Topics covered include structure, synthesis, reactivity and stereochemistry of organic compounds (especially alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkyl halids, alkenes, cyclalkenes and alkynes); free radical substitution, nucleophilic sustitution, elimination, ionic addition and free radical addition reactions; principlesof organic spectroscopy; stereochemistry; introductory kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Substances representative of the various classes of organic compounds are prepared and analyzed in the laboratory. Prereq: CHEM 122 with a grade of "C" or better.
