This course introduces the fundamental scientific concepts of biotechnology. The course covers historical development in the field and current applications in the areas of agriculture, medicine, forensics, environment, renewable energy, and chemical industry. The scientific basis of recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, stem cells, cloning, bio-terrorism, vaccines, bioethics, and other current developments are explained. The laboratory component of the course reinforces the scientific inquiry method.
