  This course emphasizes key issues and challenges concerning the teaching of language and content to English language learners. It offers students a variety of reearch-proven strategies in order to address the multiple learning needs of English language learners and their social development. Taking a step-by-step approach to teaching English language learners, this course also provides students with the basic understanding surrounding the teaching process and English language learners as well as students of other languages and cultures. By presenting ways to modify and adapt their instruction, this course offers students the tools they will need to teach the same content and curriculum to other native and non-native English speaking students. Prerequisite: None.

  Explores approaches to building partnerships for educating children. Candidates develop problem-solving skills by exposing them to challenging situations that require them to negotiate sensitive issues. Opportunities are provided for them to work in schools and communities to develop valuable communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with families with different backgrounds from their own. The application of research skills to develo a better understanding of families and community and to use information to develop family involvement activities and to create supplemental materials for classroom use is also emphasized.   This course , an introducation to school administration, is designed to acquaint the aspiring administrator with issues and trends that are likely to shape tomorrow schools and exhibit how those issues and trends affect the practice of school administration. Teh course is designed to encompass the PA Inspired Leaders standards that will provide a foundation for academic study in school administration and enhance the students ability to make informed decisions to improve student achievement.   This is a new course as a part of a newly approved degree granting program / Principal Certification Program( recently-2011- approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education) Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. This course will focus the 21st century role of the principal as an instructional leader. Principalship I builds on the perspectives and focus related to the School Vision, to incorporate a major emphasis on data driven decision making as an essential best practice to facilitate effective school operations that impact students academic achievement. Course participants will be required to do a minimum of 30 hours in a school-based Field Experience . This course of study is embedded in the Framework and Guidelines for Principal Preparations Program, i.e; PILS -Pennsylvania Instructional Leadership Standards. The PDE PILS core standards and corollary standards , along with a focus on special needs students and issues of diversity serve as the underpinnings. This course will focus the 21st Century role of the principal as instructional leadership as an evolving developmental process that requires life-long learning as the basis for continual growth for self and other is explored, within the context of the consistent demonstration of professionalism that is embodied by equal respect for all stakeholders in the educational process are the critical perspective presented. The role of the instructional leader in the development of professional learning community in order to produce a positive impact on student achievement is the central theme. Course participants will be required to do a minimum of 30 hours in a school-based Field Experience that will provide opportunities for reflection on practice juxtaposed with theoretical constructs.
