The following questions will be addressed: What aspects of marriage and family are the same for all humans, and what aspects are variable? What factors account for major cross-cultural differences in the organization of marriage and the family? Why are some features the same (or nearly so) all over? Is there a biosocial base? How are marriage and family relationships used as metaphors in organizing other aspects of social life?
