  Provides an overview of the diagnosis and clinical management of functional, organic, and resonance voice disorders and, an overview of craniofacial disorders with emphasis on cleft lip and/or palate and velopharyngeal inadequacy (VPI). The focus of this course is on the perceptual and acoustic analysis of voice disorders, as well as a physiological view of voice therapy. Procedures for diagnosis and treatment of voice and resonance disorders and related management issues will be discussed.

  Explores augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) modalities and assistive technologies for individuals with significant disabilities of speaking and writing. Students acquire skills in evaluation, intervention, and prescription of AAC for diverse disability populations across the life span. Introduces students to the disorder of autism, its behavioral and communication characteristics, and considerations for assessment, intervention, and transition planning for this population.

  Examines the organization of the nervous system and its function in speech, language, cognition, and swallowing. The course also provides a general overview of disorders of speech, language, cognition and swallowing in children and adults that are affected by diseases, trauma, and neurological disorders. Medical testing including CT scan, MRI, and functional imaging are discussed.

  Explores the anatomy, physiology, and neurological controls of the swallowing process in children and adults. Discusses the impact of various disease processes on the neurological and structural components of the swallow. Introduces procedures of evaluation of swallowing disorders, determination of objectives for patient management, and selection and implementation of therapeutic interventions for dysphagia across the life span. Emphasizes case management, interdisciplinary team interaction, and professional communication skills.

Graduate students provide services to school-aged students with communication and swallowing disorders at external sites within the professional community. Between CSD584 and CSD586, Medical Field Experience, students earn approximately 250 clinical clock hours toward certification in speech-language pathology as required by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association through supervised clinical experiences.
