The social and historical context of collecting will be examined, as will the role and influence of market participants, from artists and commercial galleries to art dealers, museums, auction houses and individual collectors. Special emphasis will be given to notions of art as a commodity, both cultural and financial, and to the theory and practice of art appraisal.
