Using a variety of methods, repertories, and resources, focus is on developing technical proficiency, musical acumen and intuition, and artistic inquisitiveness. Preparation for junior & senior recitals, and graduate school auditions, are priorities. For music performance majors only (or permission of the department chair).

  Initiates students' development of the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) required to use the Arabic language in a communicative context. Anticipated proficiency upon successful completion of the course is the Novice-Mid sublevel (based upon the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). Introduces students to features of Arabic and Middle Eastern cultures that are associated with the targeted communicative activities.

A communicative method is applied to develop the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in an intercultural content. This includes the use of authentic audio-visual materials introducing the Arabic-speaking world, situational communicative practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and laboratory activities.   ARAB211's course assignments, use of strategic approaches, applications of texts to social concerns, and written assignments associated with the texts that form the content of Arabic History, Culture, and Civilization are aimed at (a) developing skills to evaluate the sources, methods, motivations, and interpretations behind historical narratives; (b) learning a variety of sound historical research practices; and (c) crafting and presenting convincing and well supported arguments.
