Survey of British literature from Anglo-Saxon times to 1800. Texts studied span early tales like Beowulf and King Arthur legends through Shakespeares plays up to the rise of the novel in the 18th century. Students will examine historical context and thematic connections as they observe authors wrestling with social problems and larger questions about the nature of faith and heroism, love and life, the monstrous and magical. Readings selected to include works by women writers, writers of color, and writers speaking from the margins of British society.
