  This content-oriented workshop has three related purposes--first, to provide elementary and secondary teachers with an introduction to the structural characteristics of Ebonics, the most culturally significant and intensively studies ethnic lect of American English; second, to make these teachers aware of current scholarship regarding the historical origins of this lect; and third, to help them deal with the issues which this lect engenders in the classroom setting. Through the exploration of these topics, teachers will be much better prepared to provide language arts instruction to native speakers of Ebonics so that these students can enhance their social mobility by augmenting their linguistic repertoires with a standard dialect, by maximizing their literacy skills, and by enjoying the educational opportunities of an enriched classroom environment where they can engage in informative and mutually transformative dialogues with instructors who both appreciate and understand their linguistic cultural heritage.   An online, distance-learning workshop designed to provide physical educators as well as other individuals a complete review of current knowledge about physiological responses in children to exercise. By completing this course workshop participants will better understand the influence of body size, puberty, gender, growth, genetics, and environment on aerobic and anaerobic activity. In addition, information on the current trends in the testing of health- and sport-related components of fitness for children will be reviewed. The class sessions, or modules, will be conducted using online courseware (D2L). The format of class modules will include a mix of online lectures and discussion as well as the creation of teaching and/or research projects. Recommended for K-12 physical education teachers.

  This workshop teaches teachers the foundational elements of film criticism, film theory, and film studies pedagogy so that they may enhance their students' media and visual literacies. Teachers will learn about cinematography, editing, mise-en-scne, and sound as well as a number of theoretical approaches to cinema, including genre theory, auteur theory, structuralism, and race/class/gender approaches. The course is designed primarily for secondary school teachers teaching grades 9-12 in the humanities or social sciences (especially teachers in the communication arts, English, and social studies) who have no background in Film Studies; however, it will provide foundational skills for teaching film in a variety of contexts.

  Probability and statistics is required by the NCTM standards for all grade levels K-12. In the grades 3-8 the focus of the standards is on data and elementary concepts of probability. Participants will learn activities to use in teaching this material and will learn how to identify types of data, how data is collected, how to construct and interpret appropriate displays of data, how to compute and interpret appropriate numerical summaries of data and concepts of elementary probability. Appropriate activities to teach this material will be demonstrated and studied.

  This workshop introduces the classroom teacher to many of the special devices and software systems available to assist students with disabilities. Participants will gain hands-on experience with configuring and using systems to support students with vision, motor, and cognitive disabilities, including screen readers, text-to-speech systems, alternative keyboards and pointing devices, voice recognition systems, on-screen keyboards with scanning mode, and augmentative/alternative communication devices. The focus will be on using technology aids to support the learning process for students with disabilities. This class is intended for K-12 teachers who are interested in learning more about the technical needs of students with disabilities.
