  An exploration of literature and the methods of close reading. Through encounters with significant literary texts, students investigate and analyze how literary meaning is constructed; how literature shapes and is shaped by its various contexts; and how literature enables criticalinquiry into values.   Introduces students to English studies by acquainting them with the critical approaches appropriate to the varied subject areas of the discipline. The assumptions and methods of these approaches are considered, especially in the interpretation of literature.
