• SPAN 101: Beginning Spanish Language and Culture I

  For students with little or no background in the study of Spanish. (Students who have studied the language or have a background in Spanish should complete a placement test.) Develops basic ability to communicate effectively in Spanish in everyday situations by asking questions and giving common information about oneself and others in the present time frame. Also develops ability to identify main ideas from written and spoken Spanish, and to communicate in simple written forms. Explores cultural elements of Spanish-speaking countries and communities.

  A continuation of SPAN 101. Students learn to express past and future time. They continue to learn about Hispanic countries and their cultures. Attendance is required. No student will be allowed to register for or take a D/F repeat in SPAN 102 when credit has already been received for a higher numbered SPAN course.   Students will learn to function in everyday situations, expressing opinions and doubts, and narrating and describing in present, past, and future time. Exposure to cultural concepts through literary readings. Liberal Studies credit is given. Attendance is required. No student will be allowed to register for or take a D/F repeat in SPAN 201 when credit has already been received for a higher numbered Spanish course. Prerequisite:    SPAN 102 or equivalent, or the equivalent as established by the departmental placement examination.

• SPAN 221: Oral Communication in Spanish for Safety and Health

  Focuses on the day-to-day, oral Spanish skills needed by safety professionals. Intensive work in Spanish on vocabulary and pronunciation, and on using discourse strategies in spontaneous interpersonal speaking to negotiate meaning and respond in Spanish to specific work-related health and safety situations. These situations may include supervisor-employee, worker-worker, and safety personnel-employee interactions. Required for the Certificate in Spanish for Safety Sciences. Interdisciplinary as it is co-taught by faculty in the Departments of Foreign Languages and Safety Sciences. The Safety Sciences content is delivered in English.

  Intensive practice in written expression and reading comprehension in Spanish to develop the communication skills needed by safety professionals. Focuses on comprehending and producing technical texts on safety practices, such as reports, summaries, and correspondence. Includes comprehension of non-technical texts on safety-related issues, such as newspaper and magazine articles. Required for the Certificate in Spanish for Safety Sciences. Interdisciplinary as it is co- taught by faculty in the Departments of Safety Sciences and Foreign Languages. The Safety Sciences content is delivered in English. (Also offered as SAFE 231; may not be taken for duplicate credit.)

  Taught in Mexico as part of the study abroad program, introduces students to the contemporary culture of the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. A historical perspective is provided within which to understand current phenomena. Textbook readings are supplemented with readings from literary works and current periodicals. Students will gain firsthand experience both through field trips and by living with a Mexican family. Taught in Spanish. Prerequisite:    SPAN 201 or equivalent and participation in theMexico Summer Study Abroad Program
