  Traces the origin and development of English Literature from the Anglo-Saxons to the dawn of Romanticism. The literature studied in this course includes works from the Old English period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Early Modern period, and the Restoration and 18th Century. In addition, this course emphasizes an understanding of the interplay of character, style, structure, tone, and theme, as well as a sense of the relevant history, culture, and social issues that influenced the works studied.   Traces the emergence of a distinctly American identity seen through its literature produced from early 1600's to 1865. Through the study of representative works from male and female writers reflecting differing social, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and views, this course examines the resulting history of conflicts and strains in political and philosophical views that both unify and divide our country. Students have the opportunity to read fiction and nonfiction in genres including captivity narratives, public journals, private diaries and letters, autobiographies, essays, plays, poetry, and novels.
