An overview of the U.S. Constitution from its origins in the Revolutionary War, with an interest in the Articles of the Confederation and the Declaration of Independence. Standpoints of both the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists will be discussed. In addition to an examination of landmark cases in the legal heritage of the United States, the course will investigate the political, economic, and social conditions behind those cases, and the Constitution in general. The class will look at a wide range of topics, including origins of the Constitution, its development in the formative era of the republic, the War of 1812, the presidential elections of the 1830s and 1840s, and continuing through the outbreak of the Civil War.
