    Develops student understanding of culture and global perspectives through the context of education. Global views on early education - its purpose, curriculum/instruction, and role of the teacher/learner and society are examined and compared. Students critically reflect on how their cultural backgrounds influence their world-view, including personal and professional perspectives that shape their beliefs/values, decision-making/problem-solving, expectations, and with strategies for achieving equity for PK-Grade 4 learners.

    Explores migratory education though field- and activity-based learning and teaching experiences with migrant learners. Students are placed in classrooms with mentor teachers to plan/teach thematic lessons in all content areas. Students will identify and implement research-based and culturally relevant instructional practices to assist linguistically diverse learners to reach their academic, social/emotional potential. Students will enhance their cultural knowledge and cultural competence through community outreach, teaching, focused reflections, and engagement with migrant learners and their families.

    Provides students with a 120-hour field-based study abroad experience in Europe to explore a wide variety of theories, practices, and pedagogical approaches for promoting multicultural perspectives, civic responsibility, critical thinking, reflective practice, personal development, and developmentally appropriate play, creativity, and expressive arts for children, youth, and adolescents across a variety of settings.

    Introduces students to theories and methods for helping primary grade children acquire reading/ writing skills. The focus is to provide information specific to children from K-4th grade.     Places students in a community organization/agency providing care and education for children from birth through PreK.GC The student is under the supervision of an experienced professional employed by the agency and an Early Childhood Education faculty member. Students are expected to develop an in-depth understanding of the care and education programs, and services, and will assume increasing levels of responsibility as beginning level professionals.

    Develops effective and relevant strategies for planning, teaching, and assessing the six facets of language arts in Grade PK-4 classrooms. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, and writing skills for a literacy rich curriculum to support diverse and English Language Learners (ELL). This course meets standards for the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC).
