This course will examine the presidency as an institution and will explore how those who have occupied the office have expanded its powers and responsibilities and have altered perceptions about the office. The course will focus on the functions of the office and its role in shaping policy, the balance of power between the President and the other branches of the government, and formal and informal sources of executive power. While the individuals who have held the office will inevitably guide some of our discussion, the primary focus will be on the policies and politics of the office. Prerequisite: COM 051 or COM 061
