This course investigates the origin, development, evolution and processes of the American political system. Students are first introduced to the historical context and basic issues that both united and divided the constitutional framers. The foundational compromises that established the American republic and the evolution of the political system over time are then examined. Analysis of the contemporary American political system is guided by a study of the following concepts and topics: federalism, separation of power, check and balances, republicanism, democracy, civil liberties, civil rights and electoral processes.
