Covers political, economic, social, and intellectual aspects of the Progressive Movement, tracing its origins in the 19th century and showing how progressivism was a part of the background of the New Deal. Special attention given to the all-important transition of the concept of liberalism from laissez-faire individualism to state regulation. Emphasis placed upon the differing interpretations of the Progressive Movement, which have been developed by various historians. Prerequisites: sophomore standing or instructor's permission. This class is available for graduate credit.
