Examines the knowledge, values, ethics, and skills that comprise the core of professional generalist social work practice with organizations and communities. The focus includes the philosophical foundation of social work, self-awareness, values and ethics of the helping person, and the nature of professional relationships and client-worker partnerships. The complexity of social work practice from a systems/ecological perspective that is strengths-based is presented. Students also acquire knowledge about the stages, activities, and skills of problem-solving practice, engagement, assessment, intervention, evaluation, and termination. Application of these objectives will be made in field education, which will happen concurrently with this course. The course is designed for graduate-level social work students.
