Description:
The Early Language and Literacy Course is a survey course designed to construct knowledge of young children's language development and early literacy experiences in both home and school settings. This course is designed for those who will work with young children and their families to know and understand language developmental milestones, the importance of cultivating language and literacy experiences in early childhood. EEU 299 will build participants' understanding of language and preliteracy literacy development for young learners and the effect that development has on later literacy skills. This course will build foundational knowledge to allow participants' to have a greater understanding of how literacy develops so they are able to determine how to support a child's literacy development. This includes recognizing the foundational skills for language, reading, and writing. This course also includes field experience assignments which will build the participants' experience and familiarity of children and their language milestones and pre and early literacy skills. The course provides context and background knowledge for teacher candidates who will take EEU 300. EEU 301, EEU 303 and EEU 353.
