Focuses on teaching and practicing proper welding techniques for fillet and groove welds in flat and horizontal positions. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is a critical skill in the construction industry where portable welding equipment is preferred. Typical welding jobs require training, experience, a sharp eye for detail and a strict adherence to safety and housekeeping rules. Students spend the balance of classroom time developing hands-on skills with practice in the welding lab. Welding safety gear is required and a textbook is highly recommended, especially for students interested in pursuing work in the field or further study. Students may incur additional expenses of purchasing their own welding safety gear and the optional textbook The required safety gear includes: welding helmet, gloves, jacket, and safety glasses.
