Examines the cultural and social history of Early Modern Japan, including both Sengoku and the Tokugawa. This includes elite attempts at creating a stratified social order and also how less powerful groups altered or challenged this vision. Discusses the role of commercialization and commercial culture and Japan as an Early Modern society.
