This course offers a broad view of the British empire- the largest the world has ever seen- from its beginning in the sixteenth century through decolonization in the twentieth century and spanning virtually the entire globe. Special emphasis is placed on theories of imperialism, the origins of the empire, the relationship between the metropole and colony, and the legacy of the empire.
