This course is an overview of the expanding field of health psychology. Current research will be examined to understand how biological, psychological, and social factors influence health, especially as they relate to chronic and life-threatening illnesses (e.g., cancer, AIDS, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic pain). There will be an exploration of the role of psychologists and psychological research in areas such as prevention, early detection and adaptation to illness. Students will also consider cultural and gender factors that influences the following: health behaviors; access to, and utilization of, health-related resources; and health outcomes. Core: SSHB, D.
