Traces the experiences of African-Americans from the early colonial period to the present while emphasizing the following themes: the formation of a racial identity among diverse African-Americans, the rise of slavery and abolitionism, the struggles of African-Americans after the Civil War, and the evolution of 20th century civil rights movements. If prerequisite courses are not met instructor approval is required.
